🧭 How I Evaluated the Tours

Author: Balázs Sipos — Owner & Author

A desert safari is a complex experience. To compare them fairly, I built a structured evaluation framework based on what truly matters to guests and what companies can actively control. Find them in order below:

🥇 What matters most to guests & what companies can actively influence:

⚖️ Price vs. Value

Beyond the number, I looked at what you truly get for your money:
The main factors:

🧭 Activities included and their quality of execution.

Quad Biking:
  • 🏠 Infrastructure of the Quad place: Cleanliness, staff, safety setup. The first place where you arrive before and after dune bashing. Important impressions and major part of the experience.
  • 🏎️💨 Quality and strength of the vehicle: length of the usage, intensity, terrain, safety, flexibility.
  • 📍 Desert meeting point quality : The place where you start and return after dune bashing. For many operators, this is the Quad/Buggy Area, but some use public desert stops nearby to inflate or deflate the tyres and help guests clean their clothes.
Other Activities:
  • 🐪 Camel Ride: Duration, photo opportunity, and whether the ride is repeatable.
  • 🐎 Horseback Riding: Duration, freedom, guide and safety.
  • Dune Bashing: Duration, safety, and thrill level. It is really challenging to find the balance between thrill and safety...
  • 🏂 Sandboarding: Some operators don’t put much focus on it. A few even skip it entirely. But with the right guidance, it can be a really fun experience. Some tours also choose higher dunes, adding an extra dose of adrenaline for guests.
  • 🍃 Camel Feeding: These moments give you a good chance to observe how the animals are treated and how responsibly the staff interact with them.
  • 🦅 Falcon Photos: The best operators offer it for free of charge, while in many cases it costs extra.

🏕️ Camp quality:

hygiene, layout, staff, and extra activities. Seating comfortablility , After the car you spend the most time here.:

Food and Drinks:
  • 🍽️ Food quality and taste:
    • 🍛 Courses & flavors,
    • 🌿 Vegan options
    • 🧄 Freshness
    • 🍢 Amount.
  • 🥤Drinks: Usually, drinks are included in the package, at least water. However, there’s often a big difference in how much and what quality of soft drinks are provided. It also matters how proactively they’re offered: in some tours, staff make sure you stay hydrated all day, while in others you almost have to ask for every bottle, which naturally makes you drink less.
  • ☕ Welcome Tea & Coffee: Taste, Quality. Usually included in the price.
Shows and Entertainment:
  • 🎤 Show quality : Stage setup, sound, lighting, and audience interaction vary widely. Some performances are high-quality shows that could stand on their own, while others serve more as a pleasant background to dinner.
  • 🎭 Cultural authenticity: – does it feel real or staged? Some providers
  • 🎯 Camp Infrastructure: Some camps offer extra facilities such as football or badminton courts, archery, or playgrounds for kids. All of these are included in the price.
  • 🖌️ Henna Painting: A small Henna is included in the price at most company.
  • 💨 Shisha Pipe: It’s usually free of charge if you’re fine in the common area. A private shisha typically costs extra, and some camps don’t offer free version.
  • 👗 Arabic Dress for photo: Many camps include this service in the package. At some places, it’s simply not available, but they never charge extra for it.

👥 Staff:

  • 💬 Driver / Guide
They say a company is only as good as its people — and I couldn’t agree more. That’s why the driver or guide had a major impact on my overall evaluation. I looked at several key aspects:
    • 🚙 Hotel pickup: Punctuality and seamless coordination.
    • 😊 Flexibility & friendliness: How well they adapt to guests’ needs.
    • 🎓 Guide competence: Understandable English, informative commentary, caring attitude, and an attentive yet balanced approach between individual needs and the group’s interests.
    • 📸 Photo/video: Some guides are truly proactive, offering helping hand for photos and videos, creating f antastic family or group shots that often turn into lifelong memories.
    • 🔒 Safety standards: Guides have a major influence on overall safety. Through regular briefings, they ensure the group stays together. They also remind guests to use safety equipment, such as seat belts during rough rides, and make sure everyone wears the appropriate protective gear, often helping with both selection and proper fit.
  • Office colleagues:
    • 📞 Pre-safari communication: Clarity, responsiveness, and helpfulness
    • 📲 Company communication: During, and after the tour
    • 🧩 Tour organization: Structure, timing, and flow
  • Staff in the camp/ quad rental areas:
    • Even though contact with them is limited, their attitude still influences the overall experience. A friendly cook or a guide who adjusts well to the guest’s pace during quad biking can make a big difference in how the tour is perceived.

🚘Transportation:

  • 🚗 Vehicle quality and comfort: you spend around 3 hours in the car (travel time + dune bashing ) so this is one of the key aspects.
  • 🚙 Shared vs Private: Private usually costs more, but with enough people it can be just as cheap or at some providers even cheaper per person.

💰 Price:

Most people travel on a budget. We simply want the best deal for our money. That’s why I highlighted the actual cost, any potential hidden fees, and how competitive each tour is within its category.

If you’re just looking for the most affordable way to experience a desert safari, you’ll find solid options here too. Of course, there will always be providers promising even lower prices, but experience shows that those promises aren’t always kept.

⏱️Duration of the trip:

Morning safaris usually last 4 hours, and the afternoon ones around 6-7. It’s obvious that the longer the trip takes, the more experience we gain and the more costs occur on the provider’s side. If the time is properly (and equally among tours) utilized, the longer ones are usually more valuable.

🌐 Customer Reviews:

I factored in review volume and rating quality from GetYourGuide, Viator, and TripAdvisor, especially 5⭐️ praise and 1–2⭐️ concern and longer value added reviews. These often highlights key strengths and weaknesses. I personally tested all of them, but millions of people also participated so I incorporated the crowd's voice as well.

🧡 Additional value-adding aspects:

  • 👥 Group size and dynamics: Some operators are strict about filling every seat before departure, while others place more emphasis on passenger comfort. When you travel in a shared car, this often comes down to luck, but the operator’s overall attitude is usually easy to feel.
  • Clarity of expectations vs reality: How accurately does the marketing reflect the real experience? Of course, every company wants to look like the best — but in the long run, success only comes when promises match the actual service quality.
  • 🌱 Environmental and cultural responsibility: How much do they care about the environment and local culture? All safari companies pay for desert cleanups. Unfortunately often necessary after careless tourists. And some go the extra mile: I’ve even seen guides who personally started collecting trash in the area, and some agencies now organize dedicated eco-conservation safaris.
  • 🎁 Post-tour extras – photos, thank-you notes, perks:

🕊️ Factors with limited company influence (but still noted):

  • 🧼 Group behavior: This is mostly a matter of luck, but it’s hard to ignore. I learned that many safari companies really appreciate guests who book through GetYourGuide, Viator, or TripAdvisor, as they generally have very positive experiences with them. These travelers tend to be punctual, polite, and adaptable. As a result, operators often give extra attention to guests arriving through these platforms.
  • 🌅 Weather & lighting : In Dubai, you can’t really complain about the lighting. From sunrise to sunset, the sun shines almost every day with barely a cloud in sight. The only real issue is the high humidity, which can sometimes reduce visibility. Unfortunately, no one can control that — or at least not yet. There have been attempts in Dubai to artificially create rain, but after a recent experiment ended in a major flood, that technology has been put on hold for now.
  • 🏜️ Natural terrain conditions: Different companies operate in different desert areas. Most tours take place in the red-sand deserts with larger dunes, offering a more adventurous ride. However, some operators choose white-sand regions with smaller dunes, which many visitors find more scenic and aesthetically pleasing.
